11 Warm Interiors Profiling Natural Wood

Along with a sense of coziness, these projects use wood to add texture, colour, and visual interest

Among our predicted design trends for 2023, raw materials continue to spotlight in the space of interior design. At the top of our list: natural wood features that augment warm interiors. Here, we’ve rounded up eleven of our favourite projects boasting the timeless appeal of natural wood.

Warm Interiors

A Top Floor Reno

Despite the impressive skylight and soaker tub, a cherry wood storage feature is the shining star in this spacious ensuite renovated by architect Nova Tayona.

Wood Headboard

Slumber Party

Atelier Sun transformed a 1980s builder home into a tranquil oasis by dressing it in head-to-toe wood features. The result is sleek yet warm — emphasized with a glowing headboard in the principal bedroom.

Modern Interior Design

Picture Perfect

Framing the mezzanine balcony in a King West loft designed by Studio of Contemporary Architecture (SOCA), white oak adds a dash of warmth without clashing with the bright yellow feature wall.

Odami Design

Beach Beauty

Odami’s aptly-named Beaches house takes cues from traditional beachfront typology to create an urban escape steps from Queen Street. Sunlight ignites a vacation vibe in the home’s open-concept, amplifying the warmth of natural oak millwork and hardwood floors.

High Note

A total renovation of this 1980s era condo created a warm, inviting family home. Adjacent to the hallway entering the kitchen, Luciani Projects added a warm dash of natural wood in the form of a vintage Schmidt-Flohr piano.

Warm Interiors

Mixed Use

In Relmar House by architectural firm Lebel & Bouliane, soft white oak contrasts perfectly with rustic Thermory wood (a dark North American ash that is baked at 400° C to make it dry and tough). Even with tall ceilings and a bright, open stairwell, the warm interiors give the dwelling an understated coziness.

Warm Interiors, Cottage style

Cabin In The Woods

Superkül’s cedar-clad family retreat treads lightly on the lush lands of Bracebridge, Ontario. Like the project’s facade, its interiors (including that of a well-lit sun room) are dressed in cedar—unifying the angular walls and ceiling with a warm and consistent look.

Warm Interiors Featuring Wood

Towers With Timber

The highly-anticipated Forma Towers will be getting the Paolo Ferrari treatment, indoors at least. The internationally acclaimed interior designer has developed a series of renderings for the future interiors of the Frank Gehry-designed towers. In the private gym, dark wood beams and ceiling panels will add a sophisticated dose of biophilic design.

Modern Wood Features

The Creative and Coy Tile House

In this Midtown home renovation by Kohn Shnier Architects, subtle departures tantalize – a window that folds from the façade onto the roof, and a cozy terrace with a profusion of plants. Lining that architectural detail: amber wood makes a clean statement and adds plenty of warmth.

Raw Materials Interior Design Trends

Playful Plywood

Plywood timber slats are used in the playroom of this Canalside Studio project to resemble a log cabin interior. “We wanted a material that would give warmth to the space and create interesting shapes, while being on budget for the young couple who lives here,” says architect Etain Ho.

Warm Interiors

Golden State

Studio No. 33 transformed the mid-century build into a west-coast-style sanctuary for a growing family. At the heart of the design vision: natural oak that turns to caramel amber when sunlight pours in through the west-facing windows.
